PORTLAND OPERA A LA CART COMES TO VANCOUVER

Operal A La Cart

Friends and Artists,

Singers from Portland Opera will travel to Downtown Vancouver on August 5th to participate in the Vancouver's Downtown Association's First Friday Art Walk.

Inspired by food cart culture that has in recent years become part of Portland's identity, Portland Opera has converted a former food truck into a mobile theater that now functions as a cornerstone of the company's education and outreach programs. The mobile theater, which is complete with winch-down stage and slide-out proceneum is seen throughout the drier months at street fairs, wineries, farmers markets, and festivals, and is guided by a mission to bring opera into under-served communities that may not traditionally have access to the art form.

Built through the help of Portland State University's architecture program, Opera A La Cart embraces the culinary theme by presenting a "menu" of arias, duets, trios, and large ensemble numbers. Available selections are displayed via a menu board, and patrons are encouraged to "place their order" with the program's tour manager. The program was launched in the summer of 2016, though this marks Opera A La Cart's first visit to Vancouver.

The Southwest Washington Center for the Arts has collaborated with the VDA to make this event possible, and is grateful to Portland Opera for providing entertainment for the First Friday Art Walk.

The event will take place on 9th Street between Washington and Main Street, with the truck parked along the Washington end of the block (which will be closed to street traffic). Attendees are encouraged to bring folding chairs (and sunscreen!) to enjoy the event, which will present singers from 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM.
